Dorothy the dinosaur roars into Telford

Visitors to Telford Shopping Centre will be transported back more than 66 million years this summer, as the town is invaded by dinosaurs.

Star of the show will be a 7 metre tall animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex, named Dorothy.

The prehistoric creatures will take up residence from Saturday 23 July until Saturday 6 August, with Dorothy ‘coming to life’ every half hour between 10am and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, 23-24, 30-31 July and 6 August.

Telford Shopping Centre marketing manager Tracy Hadley said: “Following on from this year’s Carnival of Giants event, with its dinosaur theme, the centre will be home to its own selection of Jurassic giants.

“We know how popular these prehistoric monsters are with children and adults alike, so we can’t wait to see people’s reactions when they first come face to face with Telford’s own ‘lost world’!”

The dinosaurs have been created by Twins FX, one of the leading suppliers of visual special effects, illusions and animatronics for theatre, film and television.

Dorothy will be located in Sherwood Square (outside Debenhams) and a trail of dinosaur footprints will lead from the T-Rex to other exhibits around the centre such as a baby stegosaurus and a Jurassic crocodile.

Tracy added: “Dorothy herself is more than 6.5 metres long and weighs around 600 kilos. She is one of the biggest exhibits we’ve ever put into the centre.

“In addition to the dinosaur displays, there will be children’s activities such as colouring sheets available, other exhibits from the Natural History Museum, and lots of ‘selfie’ photo opportunities too!”

Telford’s Carnival of Giants, sponsored by Telford Shopping Centre, takes place in the Town Park’s QEII Arena, where an array of magnificent dinosaurs will parade on Saturday 16 July (11am-4pm).

Entry to the exhibits in Telford Shopping Centre and the festival is free.
